Sitting with someone who has experienced a traumatic incident, I noticed the comfort a warm cup of hot water can bring. Not coffee, nor tea, but plain hot water.

There were no words that could comfort my loved one. Yet somehow, holding the warm cup with both hands brought more comfort than anything I could have said, thought of saying, or wished I had said.

We sat in silence, together. The presence of something that unified us was palpable. This was what was needed. Not words, not advice, not action steps……simply sitting in the silence, together, and holding warm cups filled with only hot water.
